part of routine statements, usually made by MPs during sessions on
Tuesdays, MP Jondi Bagaturia from the opposition parliamentary faction,
Unity for Justice, took the floor from the Parliament’s rostrum to speak
of various issues and one of the issues he raised was last year’s
decision by the Georgian Parliament to recognize 19th century massacre
and deportations of Circassians by the Tsarist Russia in the northwest
Caucasus as genocide. He recalled this decision and criticized it in the
context of requests from Georgia’s Armenian community to recognize the
massacre of Armenians in Ottoman Empire as genocide – such appeals are
usually made almost every year in April, when the anniversary of those
tragic events are marked. “When
you recognized Circassians’ genocide just for the purpose of a one-day
PR show, we [warned] you not to do that, because we would have nothing
to tell to our Armenian citizens. I wonder what are you going to tell
these people now? These are our citizens; these are our compatriots; you
[referring to ruling party MPs] should bear responsibility for that,”
MP Bagaturia said. ... |

20 Apr. '12 | Präsident Saakashvili: 'Lasst uns Lavrov als Touristvertriebsmann rekrutieren, er wirbt gut für Georgien' By
advising its citizens not to travel to Georgia, Russian Foreign
Minister Sergey Lavrov is in fact advertising Georgia and deserves “a
tourist agent’s salary” from Tbilisi, President Saakashvili said on
April 19. “Hotels
are full of Russian tourists. More Lavrov advises [Russians] not to
travel to Georgia, the more [Russians] are arriving. Maybe we should
recruit Lavrov as a tourist agent, shouldn’t we?” Saakashvili told
Education Minister Dimitri Shashkin jokingly when visiting a new
vocational school in Kobuleti on April 19. “Planes are packed by
Russians; they all are aware of Lavrov’s statements, but they are coming
into Georgia with even more pleasure. So give Lavrov a travel agent’s
salary; he is making a good advertisement for Georgia.” ... |

Alliance "regardless of what other parties might say," James Appathurai,
NATO Secretary General’s Special Representative for the Caucasus and
Central Asia, said. The
NATO "took a decision in Bucharest [in 2008] that Georgia will become a

"[Georgia] still wants to and based on popular support in Georgia I
expect that to stay the same and Georgia is working to meet the
standards. We have not changed our view. We continue to work towards
that step when Georgia will become a NATO member and Georgia is taking
the steps as well and in fact, as the Secretary General said, we are
